I have searched your forum and read numerous messages and believe I will attempt to repair my drive but I want to get a little more information before I do.

I have a WD1600JB-00GVC0 DCM:DSBACTJAA PCB:2060-701265-001 REV A that I use as a USB external drive backup for family pics, music etc. I recently dumped my system, reformatted my master drive and reinstalled XP Pro from scratch.

I then hooked up my backup drive via usb and in the middle of transferring it shut down. I received a data write error in XP. I unhooked and rehooked the drive but it would not power up.

After some close inspection I noticed that one of the solder connections at the power connector was separated. (probably from attaching and removing the power connector over the years) I resoldered the connection and the drive powers up easily.

Unfortunately my system does not recognize the drive. When I attach it prior to boot either through the USB or internally the system hangs at the Logo screen. If I pull out the USB the system then continues to boot properly.

After booting, if I attach the drive via USB, the system works properly until I attempt to access the drive via Computer Management under Administrative Tools in Control Panel. At that point while trying to load Computer Management the system begins to bog down, ultimately locking up window after window until I am unable to click my mouse. If at this point, I unplug the USB, everything, all at once, loads and finishes and the system works normally.

Does this appear to be possibly fixable via a PCB change?

Donald,

Your drive most likely develpoed bad sectors and due to that it starts to freeze your system. Model of your drive is fairly old and that problem was going to come up any time now.

You have to make an image of your failing drive in order to pull your data.
Best imager program to use in this case, is a DOS based program.
There is a likely chance to develop more problem by doing that, but if you trying to avoid paying data recovery company to do that for you, this is a way to approach it.
