Thank GOD for this website, it gives me hope that I can mybe recover my hard drive…

It costs a small fortune to recover a hard drive by a company…ouf !

Here’s my problem : I have a western digital 80 gig…by rebooting a couple of times, DOS recognises it but the hard drive keeps doing a half-spin and stopping, along with the clicking sound…So I guess this is a mechanical problem…

My question is this : if I had a working twin of my hard drive, would switching only the « LOGIC BOARD » make it spin correctly so I can recover…what do you think guys ? please any help would be very much appreciated Smile

Ps. : I tried the freezer thing, it did not work Sad ...I also tried tapping it a few times...nothing...same problem...keeps doing the half-spin...

the problem your having is not a mechanical problem and its not a head crash
its more likely that the logic chip which contains the firmware is damaged
the noise you hear is the drive head knocking back and forwards
do try and freeze it again as you can destroy the data because when the drive heats up water can be inside the unit and allso the fluid in the bearing can damage
the only way for you to do the recovery is by tracking down the right logic board with the right firmware number on
which is the white label underneath
then the drive would work again

western digital are well known for this clicking sound
as the drives overheat

good luck in finding the right logic board
