I had an external HDD die on me due to a fried chip on the logic board and I went through a lot of trouble to find another HDD with the same model and firmware version. Did the swap and I could hear the old hard drive start up and run fine but when I plugged it into my USB port, the computer didn't recognize it. There wasn't even the usual "Remove hardware safely" icon pop up on the taskbar.
Unfortunately, I've had the HDD for over a year and because of that, the date code on the two drives are quite far apart, which I've heard can cause incompatibility issues.
My question is whether there's anything I can do to potentially pinpoint the problem (if there's something else that could be wrong) or if there are any other solutions. Any help would be appreciated. |

First required step is to post details of your drive.
Second, you should not use external enclosure and plug that drive directly to your computer.

It's a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB Hard Disk Drive (IDE), Model ST3250820A, Firmware 3.AAE.
The HDD was originally from an external anyways (not directly connected to the computer) so I figured using an enclosure would be fine. |
