Looking for tips on troubleshooting and repair for the failure of a hard drive - Western Digital Caviar 160 GB EIDE drive
WD1600BB-22GUCO , Not recognized in BIOS , NO spin up (no clicking)
WD1600
Drive Parameters - LBA 312581808 160.0 GB
S/N - WCALL1734827
MDL: WD1600BB-22GUCO
DATE: 08 AUG 2005
DCM: BSHNTJAH
Logic board /PCB - 2060-701266-001 REV A
OS installed - WinXP
1. How can I check the logic board other than visual observation for burnt components (no noticeable smell when it failed) . How ?
2. Replacement of logic board - If I can find hard a used drive of the same type , what numbers above must be an exact match ( all of MDL ? All of DCM ? ALL on PCB ? ) to allow me the use the donor board changing the transferring the ROM chip or having it reprogrammed ?
If a replacement board doesn't work, I will just hold on to the drive until I can afford to pay a DR pro for their equipment and expertise . |

This supplier includes a "firmware transfer" in the price:

As for troubleshooting your board, do you have a multimeter?
If so, then measure the voltages at each of the pins of U6 (multi-output regulator), transistor Q4 (pass transistor for linear regulator), pin #8 of U12 (flash memory), pin #1 or #27 of U4 (SDRAM).
Also measure the voltage at the anode (non-striped end) of diode D7.
I'm assuming this is your board:

Be very careful not to slip with your probes, as you could do some serious damage. You can take the measurements with the board removed from the drive. |

fzabkar - re: measuring the voltages . Do I need to have the motherboard and ide cable connected (live) in addition to the PSU cable for voltage measurements ?
- Thanks |

The reason that the hard disk cannot be detected is because the node it allocates is misplaced. Try to run a defragmentation on the disk. Try connecting it parallel to another working hardware. Then, format it and then defragment the disk. This should do the trick. But the problem is that you will lose all the content.

Guys I actually forgot to tell you about the power of the HARD Disk. I think you might want to check if the power source cable intact and working properly. If the hard disk does not drive enough power it will not run as expected.

Also Why don't you try reconfiguring the whole hard dist. try connecting it parallel to another hard disk and try formatiing it. and then try to defragment the disk. this should work i guess.. but you wont be able to get any of your data from the disk.

Just FYI to anyone reading this, those last three posts were just SPAM posts. Seems this guys posted in every thread to get his "nursing degree" signature spam links in.
Perhaps a moderator will remove them. Flagging now. _________________ Hard Drive Data Recovery Service
