Situation: client gave me G-Tech G-Drive external HD that did not work any more. Took Hitachi P7K500 (HDP725050GLA360) out of case and tried it using SATA connectors. Got nothing, no spin up, no sound at all. Connected to both PC and Mac with same results.
Decided to buy identical drive and attempt to swap out logic boards or PCB. Hoping I'd get a drive with exactly same PCB, but some of the numbers are slightly different. Swapped boards and now I get a spin up of the bad drive, but neither Mac or PC can see the drive.
More research and it appears that they probably have different firmware. Unfortunately, on the Hitachi I cannot find where they put the firmware version, if anywhere, on the label, case, PCB or chip.
Can anyone help with either:
A) locating firmware version and how to update or swap chips
or
B) Any other advice on good next steps to take

Assuming that is the chip just to the left of the white label in this picture, as that's the only 8-pin chip on the board.

Have tried switching ROM chip but no luck. Would love to be able to find exact match on PCB with correct ROM...

I have tried all the kinds of recovery tools and have always been in vain. Does sending the HDD to the manufacturer fix this? Can they actually save all our data from being lost? I have heard that the data never gets erased even if the HDD is fried.
