Hi all,

I have a 1Tb Mybook from WD (about 2008, SATA), the model number ending in EACS which I think many of you have or know of.

When doing a large copy (using linux!) of around 300GB of files, it packed in.

I've tried a fair few things: Removed it from it's USB casing and plugged it direct to my mobo via the sata cable. Also using a new USB controller case. Using different OS's. It was formated using Vista (i know i know) as NTFS to avoid the file size limitation of FAT.

Anyway the diag is as follows : It spins up fine, sounds fine (no clicks etc). It can be seen in Bios every time, also, using win7 I can see it in admin\disk management. When trying to format it I get the old I/O device connection error. Using data recovery software, nothing. Using WDs little disk diag software, it says too many bad sectors and a slow spin up error message.

I've never tried cloning/imaging a drive to recover data, would that work for me? Easiest way? Would the software see the drive?

What about the PCB, could it be that? Does sound 100% hopeless cause I can see the drive... verdicts please....

Thanks in advance,
Xav

That should be first thing on your list before you start recovering any files.

Your drive might have bad sectors as reported by WD test or one of the read/write heads failing/failed.

Hi THanks for the reply.

What imaging / cloning method would you recommend? How can an image be taken of a drive if it gives I/O device errors ?

Cheers,
Xavier

There is many different software packages available.
I am using PC3000, but its very expensive.

You have to fix a drive to working condition and then image it.

So you would say it's a waste of time trying the method of replacing the controller card ?
