I have a Maxtor Diamondmax 9 300GB hard drive in an external case connected via USB. It works fine except that, sometimes, it does something very strange. When I switch it on, it makes the usual sound of the drive starting to spin, but then it stops, and then starts again, about once a second. It does this repeatedly for maybe up to a minute, each time spinning a little faster (the pitch gets higher and higher), until it gets up to speed and spins normally and everything is working fine.

Could this be the motor on the blink? If so, should I invest in a new drive ASAP, before it blows?
