My second Seagate drive just died, so I'm again looking for donor drives and/or PCBs. I'm wondering what information has to match, though. My dead drive's specs:

Momentus 5400.3; 160 GB; Newegg-bought OEM
SN: 5MA01WLN
Model: ST9160821AS
PN: 9S1134-308
FW: 3.ALC
Date: 07286
Site: WU

I found a PCB on eBay (and it's even cheap) with matching PN, FW, and site; however, the date code is 08374. Is that difference in dates too much for me to consider?

There are some drives/PCBs on there with closer dates to mine, but the last three digits of their PNs don't match. Is that significant?

Finally, I'm wondering if anyone knows about freezing hard drives. I'm tempted to try that, but I don't want to damage the drive even more than it always is -- I might still send it to a professional some day. Assuming I put it in two ziploc bags and suck the air out, is there much of a risk of further damage if I freeze it?

I forgot to mention: my dead hard drive's PCB has "100398689 REV A" printed on it. Maybe of the donors I'm looking at have slightly different numbers, like "100398689 REV C" or "100398688 REV A". The sticker on the PCB, on the other hand, says "100398688 G 86514GBV". How much of a difference do those numbers make?

Do not freeze your drive. It's a biggest hoax on internet.

Match your PCB number and transfer ROM chip, this of course if your drive does not spin up and does not make any noises.

Will freezing hurt a drive? Or is it more a matter of it being ineffective?

So I should match the string "100398689 REV A" exactly? Actually, my drive does make noises. I'd have to plug it in again to be able to describe it in full, but as I recall it alternately makes swishing and clicking noises. The clicking isn't as loud as my first Momentus's, but I don't know if that means anything.

When I first noticed the drive was bad, it had started making quiet clicks, somewhat slowly. I shut my laptop down and plugged it into my Linux desktop with a USB enclosure. It then made mostly normal drive sounds, and Linux was able to at least read the volume name and the names of the directories in the root. It even showed up on my desktop as mounted. But I couldn't read anything else.

I wanted to run TestDisk on it, but I couldn't get the OS to unmount it -- so I unplugged it and plugged it back in. After that, it couldn't read anything, and the present clicking/swishing started Sad

Freezing will hurt your drive even more.

Clicking sound is probably due to some physical damages on platters.
Physical damage can increase with every attempt to power your drive on.

At present moment only chance for your data is to find data recovery pro.

Unfortunately, there is no DIY solution.

as harddrivespecialist said it more look like head & platters problem. change PCB will help nothing for this matter. for matching PCB no need to care about REV:X version. even you can use another model(similar one) instead of. important thing is swap ROM chip to good PCB.
