Dear all,

Would really appreciate some advice please.

To cut a long story short, may I link to a thread I started in the Techsupportforum site (pictures there):

Essentially I

- Plugged a wrong PSU into my ext drive, which killed it.
- Removed the D3 diode
- Drive has come back to life
- However, now it spins up and goes 'spin, click, spin click, spin click' and spins down again.

Any advice please! Should I look to get a new PCB, or give up on the drive altogether?

Obvious the data is important to me or I wouldn't be bothering! Thanks!

Your board could have suffered more damage beyond your protective diode, but there is a big chance that power surge also killed preamp chip inside a drive. In both cases, data usually fine, but in order to retrieve it you will have to take it to a pro. If your board is at fault, you are looking at few hundred dollars, if its a preamp damage it will be very expensive. Pro will be able to determine exact problem.
Do a research on data recovery places, their reputation and price. This is a best advice I can give you.
