I have a 160GB USB2 drive that the drive led starting blinking, and would not spin up. I pulled the pcb and found the motor controller chip cratered. I started google searching by the drive model and MLC and found gotbackdata.com. Sunnydreamspace found a pcb with the same drive model, MLC, and first two pcb codes. Received the pre-tested board in 3 days.
Bought some Chip Quik low melt solder, a new fine tip for my soldering station, and some Chem-Wik braid at Fry's, borrowed a 10X microscope and swapped the NVRAM 8-pin chip. Plugged in the drive and it spun up with no errors. Recovered all 142GB of family pics and video, backed it up to another disk, and then burned it to DVD's. My wife did not even know I had lost all the pics... but then I bragged later about fixing the pcb under a microscope, having dvd's in-hand. |
