I am new to this, but my psb has a burned-out chip but I think the drive is still good. I have never repaired a HD before, but I spent yesterday reading about how to do it and that's how I ended up here.
The drive is a WD800
MDLWD800JB-OOJJCO
DCM ESBHCTJAH
I think if I can get a PCB that matches, I might be able to access the data on this drive (input appreciated). I looked for one yesterday but could only find them on the Malaysian Ebay, which I am hesitant to do.
if anyone has any tips for me I would really appreciate it. The data isn't crucial, but it would be nice to have.

The SMOOTH chip is the spindle motor and voice coil controller.
I would first confirm that none of the motor windings is shorted or open circuit. Use a digital multimeter on the 200 ohms range to measure the resistance at the motor terminals. The 4 pins connect to three phases and a common terminal.
When replacing the board, I believe you will need to transplant the 8-pin serial EEPROM chip from patient to donor. This is because it contains drive specific calibration data.
The EEPROM is located above the Marvell MCU in this photo:

I am obviously over my head. Thanks fore your time but I have no idea what the heck your talking about. Don't know what the MCU is and I can't solder, so I guess I am SOL. I will keep the drive in the off chance I come across the same drive with the same PSB somewhere else. |

hi,
i have this PCB in stock. and be able to help you soldering ROM chip to good PCB. your model should be 2060-701292-00X REV:A. am i right? and for your case may be no only PCB got fails. i think head may have chance damaged also. please contact me by email or MSN if need help. i can handle it. thanks.

The MCU is the biggest chip. It has an M for Marvell on it.
A junior tech at your local TV repair shop should be able to handle the soldering for you.

i am using pro tools for read unique data from MCU and write it into good PCB. that prevent any mistake during soldering operation(pins short) make hard drive worst. it's more faster and stable. ensure customer data safe.
