My drive recently died. I got the BSOD with an UNMOUTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error. I tried running CHKDSK, after about 25% complete it came back with "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable partitions". It does not make any clicking noises, it is just dead. I could perceive some minor vibrations when CHKDSK was running, but nothing appreciable. I've replaced the drive and although I had most of the stuff on the dead drive backed-up, there are some files I'd like to retrieve. Does the above error scenario sound like the PCB, or more like some mechanical problem that would require professional help. $40 for a board is not bad, but the files I want aren't worth much more than that to me.

If that drive spins up and makes no clicking noises, its not a PCB problem.
Its most likely a logical problem, specially if you can scan a drive.
If your data does not worth much to you, you can try to scan it with some logical recovery software to try get your files back. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |
