Have a WD2500KS, which I'm guessing touched something it shouldn't -- all I got when I applied power was that familiar tick-tick-tick.

Found a seller on eBay that had the replacement logic board, and installed that. However, when I pulled the old board off, I noticed that the bios-chip-thing (the one that stays on the drive when the board comes off) looked damaged, and the pads on the old board where the pins made contact looked burnt as well... and when I hooked the drive up, it came up as 0 cylinders, 0 heads, etc.

My assumption at this point is that if I'm to have any chance of recovering the data off that drive is that I'll have to replace the bios chip thing.

Does anyone have one (that they're willing to part with)? I don't know if WD stores bad sector remappings on that chip or on the drive somewhere, but I figure recovering a subset of data is better than recovering none.

(also sent in email)

I’m not sure what you’re getting at – there’s not any socketed chips on the logic board; just the chip that stays attached to the drive (which is what I’m looking to replace). I can provide a picture of the old board, if that helps.

Bad pic, but best I can do. The burnt pin-area I was talking about is to the bottom right.

Do you swap the rom chip before you swap PCB? The Rom chip were eight pins.

Thanks
Eric

No, I hadn't. Do you think that the 0 heads/0 cylinders/etc thing is the ROM and not the chip I was thinking it was?

Okay - I got the "my first SMD repair" kit and moved the referenced chip over.

It's not coming up as 0 heads/0 cyl/etc anymore, but it's not coming up "right", either - Wihdows sees it as an undefined 7.8Gb disk in Disk Management.

Got a better picture of the "burned" spots on the old board:

So what's the next step, or is this drive truly dead?

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I really understand what you're getting at.

It sounds like you're saying that the discoloration is not a concern (it was on the old board), that I've got more problems than just swapping out the BIOS and that I've got a firmeware problem and a head crash?

Not really sure what you're asking about "can you have get fails after replacement ROM chip" - I did swap the BIOS over as the video you provided showed (thank you very much for that) and the drive coming up as the wrong size is after that.

Is there nothing else to be done from my end rather than ship the drive off to have someone else work on it?

If you replaced board and moved original chip over and your drive shows as 8Gb drive, that means your drive most likely has read/write head problems.
