Are you sure your PCB is bad? _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

Sure is a tough place to be.
Story goes like this:
Was using external ATA enclosure, but the enclosure was not powering up any hard drive I put into it. (The enclosure had worked previously)
I being the brilliant chap that I am, decided to hook up the power supply from my computer to the hard drive to see if it would start to spin. Quite accidentally, the computer was still on and it instantly shorted out the system. Fortunately, the computer itself was not damaged and it runs fine.
The hard drive, however, is another story. When I connect it to the power supply with nothing besides the motherboard/cpu connected, the CPU fan spins for a second and then stops. No BIOS, no POST, no nada. Connected it to two different computer PSUs and same result.
The computers both boot with other hard drives.
I am virtually certain it is the hard drive and I find it unlikely that a working hard drive had a mechanical failure as a result of a power surge. Do you have any other thoughts? |

If your drive spins up, its less likely a PCB problem. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

If I plug it into a computer's CPU, the system will shut down as soon as I try to turn it on. (It momentarily takes power and then completely dies.) My understanding is that this indicates a short circuit.
In any event, it doesn't spin because I can't get power to it. |

In this case you probably have TVS shorted.

I am guessing this is you

and I had already seen that. I am thinking I will try this fix this weekend. I thank you for help both then and now (seemed to work for the other guy).
Do you think I should I give up trying to source the board until I've tried the fix?
I saw some places that it can be quite an effort to find a matching board, so I was trying to get a head start. |

First thing to do: get a new drive to copy your data to, when you get your drive going.
Second: if there is another short on a board, and drive has no protection, it could cause very bad (expensive to fix) problem. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

The possibility of further damage is why I am hesitant. I have a brand new PSU and a surge protector, so I am hoping that they should be able to give me enough stability to copy from the drive the files I need. Once done, I understand that I should kiss the drive good bye.
Do you have my board in stock? |

I might, but I keep my Samsung parts for internal use, not for sale. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

What if I swap it and then send you the whole drive in return? I'll still pay for it, but you can have it back. I just need a few files off of the drive. (A wedding video. Queue sad music.) |

Fair enough. I'll save the begging for when desperation sets in.
Do you know any other sources for Samsung parts? |
