|
|
I have a IBM Deskstar 60 GXP, ICL35L060AVER07-0 ...60 GB 7200 RPM ATA/IDE that went bad from some frequent power outages one day when a storm came by. The other interesting thing is that I had acidently filled up the hard drive completely slightly before the outage... as in I was in Linux on another hard drive, this one as a slave or secondary, formatted as a vfat/fat32, and I 'cp' a 100mb file over when I had less than that space available... and I didn't really notice that it said hard drive was full until after the outage, but at that time I had ata read errors being dumped to a tty(1?)...on the next restart it had a click of death.
I remove it sin hopes that I might be able to save it.
I gt a replacement, same P/N: 07N6655..I try to switch the logic boards...lcukily a different click was observed, but still one never the less... for some reason, I cant rememebr what I did, but it doesnt click anymore(good?) but the BIOS doesnt recognize the size neither...I jsut updated the firmware on this new drive...nothing is on the label about it so I have no idea what the old drive was....That didnt work for the bios to recognize it neither...
I take a closer look at the logic baords and there are a few differences, even though they were made in the same month, mine is made in China and the new one is made in the Philipines....
My question is this...sicne the logic baord switch and firmware updating didnt have any effect on it...if I make a closed container (A see through tub with two big dish gloves glued in two holes) I can switch the p;platters, or atleast look at mine without the fear of dust...am I able to do this, to switch the platters? or with the few differences (a few chips and the now new firmware) could there be a chance that it wont work neither and I should send it into a professional(I dont have hte money for that) _________________ One Copy Good Is; Many Copies Better Are |

Everything that you do, is just making it worse.
You have 2 ways out.
1)Put it aside and wait until you have money for recovery.
While shop around for reliable recovery firm
2)Ruin it and forget about your data. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

well, how would a data recovery place do it? I have pretty much the exact drive as a duplicate...does updating the firmware do anything to the platters? Does a power outage ever effect a platter?(I'm thinking a power surge wculd destry it) Is it just risky? Are there any other Homebrew people out there that have replace their platters and got them to work? atleast I could open it up and examine them to see if they look bad, or if I can see any other internal components which are bad, if visible. Wouldnt I be doing the exact hting that a lab does? _________________ One Copy Good Is; Many Copies Better Are |

Powersurge killed your board and probably preamp chip inside a drive.
If you open your drive, cost of recovery will simply double and chance of recovery will decrease drasticaly.
Platter swap is the last thing you want to do with your drive or any drive.
I am trying to prevent you making big mistake. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

What's this about the preamp chip? I could much easier replace chips inisde than the platters... I wonder if the logic board were incompatible from the star though, being made in different countries, even though on the same month _________________ One Copy Good Is; Many Copies Better Are |

"I could much easier replace chips inisde than the platters..."
You have no clue where that chip is located or looks like or if it could be replaced, but you making this statement.
Yes, board has to be compatible.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to spend months or years to train you to do this task.
There is no other advices I can give you. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |
