I'm looking for a Seagate ST96812AS drive or PCB (preferably the whole drive). Ideally it'd be one with FW 7.01 and site WU, but I'm not sure how picky I have to be to match them.

Does anyone know what you have to match on these? I already got one working one off of eBay, but it had a different FW version. Now I see another drive on eBay that does have the FW I need (7.01), but its site code is different -- my bad one has site WU, which I guess is Wuxi, and the one I'm thinking of bidding on has site AMK, which I've found out is Ang Mo Kio. Does the site matter with Seagates?

For that matter, I seem to have read somewhere that you could sometimes even use a PCB from a drive of different capacity, if the firmware matches. I have seen some Seagate drives of different sizes with FW 7.01. Would those do the trick?

Lastly, my bad hard drive definitely has something rattling inside when I shake it up and down; the working one I bought does not. Does this mean that I probably won't have any luck no matter how many donor drives I try? Or maybe I'll have to put the platter in a good drive or put good heads in the bad one? I've looked inside the drive (heads, platter, etc.) and I don't see anything obviously wrong, but that rattle worries me.

(I'm putting this in "Hard drives wanted" because I do want a hard drive, but since I put so many other questions in it might be more suited for the general discussion forum. Oh well; I hope someone sees it here.)

I did manage to get a working drive with FW 7.01 and site WU, like I wanted, but the PCB still did not revive my old drive Sad
