I think I have a problem similar to others here but want to check.

My external WD drive will not show up in My Computer.

DRIVE:
WD Caviar Green 1TB
SATA/16 MB Cache
WD10EACS-00D6B1

What it does:
I hear it spin up, after about 45 seconds it clicks, stops spinning momentarily, then spins up again. It then spins for another minute and stops spinning. The drive does not show up in BIOS or Disk Management

What I have tried:
1. Plugged the USB cable in THREE different laptops.
2. Swapped out USB cables.
3. Removed from external case and plugged directly into SATA cable on desktop computer (tried this on TWO different desktops).
4. Removed the logic board, inspected it for burnt parts. Cleaned it with Isopropyl Alcohol (I work in a cleanroom).

Interesting occurrence:
When I first brought the drive to work and pugged it into the USB port of my computer I was able to see the drive. I attempted to run chkdsk to check for errors but after about 2 minutes the drive stopped working.

I have contacted a couple of data recovery companies but they are quoting me $400-$650 dollars.

Any suggestions? Should I try to buy a new logic board? The data on the drive isn't worth $400 but it is worth $100 or so.

Thanks,
Tranquilo

Eric,

Yes, I am looking for a PCB. Based on my research the two highest probable causes for the drive not working are

1. Bad PCB.
2. Bad sector on drive where firmware is located.

The PCB replacement is relatively inexpensive and easy to do.
The bad sectors would require expensive, professional care.

If you have a PCB can you send me the numbers on the board and I can see if they match the numbers I have taken off of my drive.

Also, what would be the price of the PCB?

Thanks

NOTE: I went to your website and searched for the SN of my PCB and did not find a match.

Simple PCB swap won't help.
You will have to reprogram new board with info from original board.

Overall, I don't believe you have a problem with a PCB.

Careful diagnostics has to done in order to figure out exact problem.

Hi, we have this working PCB, but for this new WD ROYL version, rom program have been joined with the main chip, it is hard to deal with by personal, so we suggest you to find a pro near you.

Thanks
Eric

I am in Southern California. I have received quotes to do data recovery. It is beginning to sound like repairing this drive is beyond my expertise. I may have to bite-the-bullet and send it off for professional help. Bummer. I didn't want to spend more than $100 or so.

$400-$650 is very cheap.
Make sure those are legit companies.

How can I be sure which recovery service is legit? Do you have any recommendations?

Let me know the name of the companies you have talk to. I know several of them in California.
I don't understand how can you diagnose a drive without having it.

Does it click for 45 seconds and then spins down or does it spin for 45 seconds, then clicks and spins down? How many clicks do you hear?

Does it click, spins down, spins up and clicks again, spins down, spins up and clicks and then totally spins down?

It spins for 45 seconds, clicks once and sounds like it turned off momentarily, then spins back up for a minute before shutting down. Maybe the click is the power shutting down?

From Ebay
Hi,
Thank you for visiting our data recovery listing. Based on what you explained, it will be $429 + $16 return S&H if your data was available for recovery.
Seems like you did the right thing by cleaning the PCB with Isopropyl as sometimes the dirty PCB will cause bad contact with the preamp legs causing the drive to click.

Out of all of those companies, I have heard only of SF lowcost....., but don't know them and don't know how good they are.

There is 2 near LA, which is very reliable.
