I bought a western digital WD10EADS 1.0TB drive.. 3 months later it died. i looked at the PCB board and noticed there was a burn mark right on a chip. I bought another identical drive (cant tell if firmware is different, but they do look very similar) I replaced the PCB, and the drive now spins up. But it does not show up in BIOS or Windows. Disk management does see the drive, but it asks too initialize the drive. When i try to do that, it fails giving me a Illegal Function error.

Not sure what to do now.

Each WD drive has unique microcode programmed into a board.
Unless you will match a board and then reprogram that new board with microcode from original board, your drive won't work.

Hi, Betray,

Do you keep you original old board in your hand ? If you still keep it, you could just swap the BIOS chip. The BIOS chip have its unique Rom program.

Pls advise the PCB No. which was printed in the back side and have some words "REV" here. I will try to show you where is the BIOS chip.

Hi, Betray,

First, pls advise the PCB No. which was printed in the back side and have some words "REV" here. (It should be "2060-??????- 00? REV ? " , Both old PCB and new PCB)

Let me check if your PCB have its BIOS chip.
