new to forum but have a 100GB model WD1000 (need to get full model #) that apparently has a problem with a component on the PCB board. I don't fully understand the circuitry and what controls what but the drive doesn't spin up (seems like i hear a faint attempt but no go). I have a computer shop and have kept a number of bad drives for this reason to exchange boards when required. Problem is this 100GB seems like an odd ball and I'm having problems finding an exact match. I tried several boards (40gb with very similar almost exact match and and a 20GB) so far and a couple actually spin up but Windows recognized as 120GB not 100GB and the Dell BIOS that I'm using shows as "UnKnown". My thinking is that the Dell BIOS should recogize correctly before I have even a remote chance of reading it in Windows or Knoppix or whatever.

The board # is 0000 001092-200 G (Is this referred to as board or PCB number?)

1) Whats key components do I try to match up, chip number, motor control, etc?
2) The number on the white bar code label on top of back of drive. Is this important?
3) Does size matter? Matching up 100GB to 100GB. Noticed that many of the smaller drives have very similar chips and numbers.

My hope is that one of you gurus out there will point me in the right direction and tell me what I should be looking for.

Hi,

You need to match the PCB No. which was printed in back side and have some words "REV" of your PCB.

If you could find a match new working PCB, then you could start to swap.

And before swap PCB, you have to swap the BIOS chip first.

How do I identify BIOS chip? Thanks, Rod

Hi, Rod,

The BIOS chip have 8 pins (4 pins in each two sides) and have some words "...25..." If you could not find it, send you high quality picture to my hotmail, I will show you.

P.S. Pls remember to match the exact PCB No. first.

It is better if you will swap ROM chip from original board to a new one.
I believe, ROM chip is located in a top left conner and has 20 pins on each side. (IDE pins located on a bottom).
