I have a dead Maxtor 40GB D540X. However, it still seems to be spinning, because the operating system tries to load (but ends with a blue screen error). I woud like to get some data off this hard drive thanx

Try installing your operating system on another hard drive and set the jumper on the drive you need to get files from to slave. Retrieve your files and just reformat the drive and re-install your operating system on the Maxtor... Good luck...
