HD model: HTS541212H9AT00 5400rpm drive was in a Lacie Rugged external case.
Plugged it in via Firewire on my mac, and nothing, no spin up, just nothing. It seemed fine, with no signals of impending failure prior to this.
Changed firewire cables, went from 400 to 800 plug, tried USB, tried external power, and nothing worked.
Took the HD out of the case and put another in, it spun up. HD case is working fine.
If no spin up, that's' no clicking whirring either, is there a way to work out if it's the circuit board or the internals before I start messing with it. And seriously, is that 'put it in the freezer thing' that's floating around the net some kind of sick joke or what?

Strat with replacing a PCB on your drive. You will have to match info on a white sticker on your Original PCB.
No, don't even think about freezing a drive. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

I've just discovered that my old laptop drive, which was replaced and I now use as a backup for the laptop is an Hitachi Travelstar as well.
Info on the sticker is different however, notably:
MODEL: HTS548080M9ATOO
SPEED: SAME
5V 11.0A (same - but is this the reference to firmware number?)
ATA/IDE: SAME
DATE: JUL-04
Apple HDD Firmware 2003
P/N: 14R9064
Would I be wasting my time swapping the PCB for these models?
The failed drive's manufacture date is SEP-06 |
