Hello, I'm new here because this is the first HD I've fried. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. First off, I'm not sure how this happened but I suppose it could of been user error. I had the case tipped over and set the HD face down on a metal base. I turned on the computer and started to smell something funny so I quickly pulled the plug. Sure enough my HD circuit board was toast.
My questions is, how likely can I restore the data on this drive by simply replacing the circuit board?
Also, I tested the rest of the PC and everything was fine with a different drive. I did however smell burning in the core of the CPU fan so I swapped that before testing. Could my dead HD fried the CPU fan as well? I'm afraid to test it in case the destruction spreads.

You still have a good chance of recovering your data, as long as power surge did not reach reading/writing heads.
You have to find good macthing board for your drive.

ordered the same drive off ebay but was unsure of the firmware since the seller wouldn't respond. got anxious and bought it anyway and it came in the mail today. got a fright when i saw the firmware was different but it didn't matter cuz the bad drive is working like its new again!!  now if i could just find a spare board to put that extra 200gigs to use.. :/ |
