Story:
I set my HDD ablaze when I hastily crammed my HDD cage back into my computer case. The honkin' long video card apparently attacked my SATA power cable causing it to shift....the result was a pretty orange glow, then flame, burning plastic emitting black smoke, panic, blowing, cursing. I had to turn on the box fan in the window before the smoke alarm went off at 1AM.
The Fix:
To fix it, I used some pin-out diagrams (http://pinouts.ru/Power/sata-power_pinout.shtml, http://www.pc-user.co.uk/power_connectors.htm) from the internet and soldered wires onto the PCB to replace the melted power connector. I hooked the wires up to a molex power connector. Although I had my important stuff backed up via Mozy, I thank God the fire was extinguished soon enough to prevent damage to the drive and house...I didn't lose anything in the process
