If your drive spins up but is not detected, or its file system is reported as being damaged, as you have said in another post, then it's not a board fault. In any case, when swapping boards, you need to transfer the flash chip at U12, or its contents, from patient to donor. This chip stores unique, drive specific information. If location U12 is vacant, then the flash contents are internal to the MCU chip (the largest one).

This particular drive my 1TB, the PCB fried when the wrong power cord was plugged into it. It doesn't spin up.

My other post was pertaining to my 500GB which spins up, is recognized, but showing no data. The professional recovery place's diagnosis is a head crash problem. Don't you normally hear a sound or something when the drive spins up with a head crash problem? Confused

An overvoltage on an external drive usually results in a shorted 12V protection diode, in which case the solution is usually an easy, no-cost DIY repair.

See this photo:

TVS diode D4 is probably shorted, and resistor R64 may be open circuit. Examine your PCB and let us know what you find. If you have a multimeter (a cheap one costs US$10), measure the resistance of both components on the 200 ohms range.

As for your second question, a head crash would normally be associated with bad sounds from the drive. If the drive is in an external case, then it could be that your OS is detecting the USB-SATA bridge board inside the enclosure rather than the drive behind it.
