Head crashed or corruption in firmware.
What sounds does it make when start?
Knocking non-stop or knocks, then stops the motor and starts again? |

I also have a WD 80GB drive that is reporting SABRE. I found this place by googling the "WD ROM SABRE" that it showed, as I knew that to be unique.
NeGrusti, it sounds like you know what is going on. My drive, when it is plugged in with make a small spin up noise, then knock twice, pause one second and retry four times, then finally spin down and be unreadable. during this spinning, my motherboard reports it as a WD ROM SABRE, and then later windows cannot read from it.
I am now attempting to freeze the drive, as I have read that can unstick jammed mechanical parts. |

When a drive reports the incorrect details in the BIOS it is due to firmware corruption. It is not a mechanical failure. Often the drive will report its general model. E.g. Seagates will report Neptune or Galaxy3d as this refers to the model type.
You need specialist equipment to correct the fimrware.
Also do not put your drive in the freezer - you are more likely to cause an electronic failure when it is plugged in an condensation forms on it.
If you need any help then get in touch,
best wishes,
John

Can you list the details of each of the drives you have.
The ROM chip does not hold firmware it hold other information regarding the boot up of your disk. It is only necessary to do a ROM exchange on 7200.11 Seagates.
If you have an exact match for the donor parts to your original & faulty drive I would perhaps think you have a firmware error. This can only be corrected with products like the PC3k or other such tools
All the best,
John
