I managed to find a control board with a later firmware and have managed to get the drive to spin up, but cannot access anything, nothing recognised in windows

The original control board was fried when it was connected to the wrong power supply.

You have to transfer EEPROM chip from original board to a new one. That way adaptive data will match your drive.

Not done that before, which is the EPROM chip and is it soldered?
