Hi,

I think I need PCB the but here's the story just in case...

The disk was in its original Seagate USB enclosure and went unresponsive while the computer was on. After reboot it didn't show up anywhere in Windows.

So far, I've tried a different USB enclosure and internal connection as well. In all cases, if I power the computer up when the drive is already powered up, after a long running startup, it does not show up in Windows; even though it is recognized during the boot sequence, while connected internally. But if I power the drive up when the computer is already on, the drive is somehow recognized in the system tray, correctly identified in Device Manager, but never make it to the Disk Management and thus, Windows Explorer; both Disk Management and Windows Explorer becomes unresponsive.

The drive seems barely spinning up and then it's all quiet. If it's the PCB, here are the details:

Barracuda 7200.7

200 Gbytes

Model: ST3200822A

S/N: 4LJ3029E

P/N: 9W2844-301

HDA P/N: 100314751

Config: A5C-08

Firmware: 3.01

Date Code: 06242

Site Code: TK

100299703 E 7620T5WC

If anyone could help me on that, I'd be thankful.

"The drive seems barely spinning up and then it's all quiet. "

Does your drive still spinning or does it stop spinning?

"But if I power the drive up when the computer is already on, the drive is somehow recognized in the system tray, correctly identified in Device Manager"

Does it identifies itself as a full model number of the drive? ST3200822A?
Or just identifies USB connected to a computer?

"Does your drive still spinning or does it stop spinning?"

It's hard to say, that's why I'll get into details again. Sad

After a second of initial spinning noise, it seems to go idle; there's movement inside, but no sound.

As the USB enclosures speak, the led on its original enclosure blinks when there's activity and remains still when it's idle. After the incident, the led is on for a second and then starts to go off and on, as if the power was going off and on.

The second enclosure's led flashes green during activity and red when it's idle; with that drive, it flashes green for a second and then stays red.

"Does it identifies itself as a full model number of the drive? ST3200822A?
Or just identifies USB connected to a computer?"

Yes, it identifies itself as a full model number; ST3200822A.

Thanks for the interest and sorry for the poor information.

Your drive is still alive.
It has some logical problem a physical issue with it.
First thing to do is to get an image of your drive.
If you unable to do so, get so professional help, it should not be expensive at present moment.

Keep in mind, that long long and stressful operations of the drive could be fatal to your data/drive.

It's great to know that there's hope. Smile

I'll take a shot at booting from an image software CD and if that doesn't work, get professional help.

Do you think that it may also work to wait for Windows for hours, so that it might recognize the logical structure? Because, so far, I've never been that patient.

You have to make an image in shortest time possible. Don't let that drive spin for a long time. Remember......., it's dying.

Last update:

I employed Acronis True Image Boot CD in order to get an image of the hard drive. It successfully recognized the only partition on the drive as app. 186GB NTFS and started to take the image, but it had errors reading each and every sector and I had to choose "ignore all" option. At the end, I got an image of an 186GB NTFS partition with nothing in it.

That's why, I'll get a professional help.

Thanks for all your help and guidance.

It seems that Acronis can at least read LBA 0.

Have you tried imaging the drive in reverse?

Try dd_rescue or ddrescue freeware.
