I'm trying to get some references and stories from anyone who has had a positive or negative experience in mailing their broken hard drive to any of the specialists who advertise on this forum.

Data is irreplaceable, and thus I want to know more about peoples experiences and other factors before I embark on the process myself.

Absence of bad feedback says a lot already.
You can find positive feedback on every single one forum member with a big number of posts. You just have to make sure you send your "irreplaceable" drive to a data recovery professional, not a parts supplier. That you can review on your own.

So with all the replies to peoples posts about folks in China/HK being able to fix hard drives, no one here has actually gone ahead with this and can post their experiences?

Sunny I have a dead hard drive, and 2x working drives of the same model (however the firmwards and pcbs most probably are newer). Also another hard drive of the same family, just larger GB size.

So that's potentially 3 working hard drives I have to maybe get my dead one working. I have seen the youtube clip of removing the firmware chip from the dead drive, and putting it on a working drive's pcb. Is it really that simple, or do I need to post more pics?

Problem solved. I found an exact version of my drive on ebay, and after swapping the pcb was able to copy all the data off it Smile

We have hired an IT in our office. If still he can't fix my hard drive, I will surely run to Sunny.

Regards and God bless.

I recently sent a dead drive to Sunny and he was able to retrieve everything. He was fast and kept me in the loop throughout the entire process. I couldn't be happier. Rest assured, he does quality work at a great price.

hi. i really recommend Sunny.

i'll try to tell my story as short as possible.

one day my HD didn't spin up. i took it to a shop, 40 bucks and a few days later i heard the data couldn't be recovered. all they did was connect it directly through SATA. nothing else.
so i went on the internet, and stumbled on this board. i read about hardware a little and then posted my problem:

http://deadharddrive.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=9529&highlight=#9529

the wires of the USB connection were burnt (excuse my poor english, it's not my first language). i'm still unsure what exactly was damaged.

i sent the disc to Sunny, he repaired it. he sent it back to me. within a few minutes, i connected it to the HDshell and it stopped spinning. being a dumbass, by connecting the disc to the same shell that caused the burning i was back at zero. luckily, Sunny had made a backup.

so i sent him a brandnew external HD, i paid him for shipping and additional backup and he put the data on it. and now i received the disc with all the data i would otherwise have lost.

he was helpful by answering questions and helping out with my problems. he saved my data! i really recommend getting in touch with Sunny if you want to recover your data at a reasonable price.

also, i'd like to stress to make backups. i travel around a lot, and by moving around my external harddiscs i broke about 5 time a HD (no joke). the last HD i broke broke just without a reason, it was on my desk all the time - i didn't move it around. it just broke down one day, so don't think your HD can not break down because it's only a few months old. make a backup by buying a second one. a 1,5 TB HD isn't that expensive anymore!
