hi. i have a Seagate that wouln't run anymore, so i bought it to the pc shop to repair (i dont know anything about hardware).
after paying 40 bucks and waiting around a week they told me the harddisc broke. they tried it in an extern station and couldnt make it run. that's the only thing they could try they told me.

i have a fractured rib, and have to sit around the house for two weeks.. so found this site, and read the sucesful story on the mainpage and got excited!

before i wanted to join the club here i tried to connect the usb and power cable again though, just hoping it would work again.. and a little smoke started going out of it!
firmware/systemboard literally fried, right?

this disc is about 2 years old. it has data from a crashed computer, songs i made, lots of travel pictures, movies, old songs, documents, yadda yadda... ten years of stuff are on this thing. so i want to fix this Seagate Barracuda disc really bad.

what i learnt (and please correct me if i'm wrong), is that if i find another systemboard (which is the green plate attached to the harddisc) with the same firmware type/number, and screw it gently on my Seagate harddisc it MIGHT run again?

i asked on another pc forum and someone told me the chance that it will work again with this method is little..

i'm willing to pay a lot for printboard which has the firmware that matches my disc. firmware: SD35.

anyone here got luck by screwing on a new printboard, and has tips ?

The smoke would suggest that you have a shorted TVS diode. This is a very simple DIY fix.

If you upload a detailed photo of the component side of the PCB, the solution may be as simple as removing the shorted component with flush cutters.

You have to remove a PCB from your drive and take a very good picture of the side were all microchips are visible.

i'm afraid of removing the PCB, isn't the harddisc very very sensitive for damages once the PCB is removed?...
