Hi guys,

my collegue asked me if i could repair he's harddrive,
it's an 160GB Seagate ST9160821AS,
when i connect it true a SATA-USB the computer finds it in Device manager but he can't read out the device,
also my Disk management starts acting very weird. and when i disconnect the USB (to SATA-drive) everything is acting normal again, so the drive is recognized but...

i orderd a spare with the same Serial number online,
once arrived at my home i noticed that the serial number was the same but there are some differences, i switched the logic board but that doesn't work.
apparently the original hard drive is an OEM product for HP!

Original HDD:
ST9160821AS
P/N: 9S1134-020
F/W: 3.BHD
on Print: 100398689 REV B

Spare HDD:
ST9160821AS
P/N: 9s1134-066
F/W: 3.ALC
on Print: 100398689 REV C

i found out that Seagate has a tool for upgrading logic boards,
could that be a solution?
anybody had the same problem?
i know my last options are: switching the firmware component and changing the plates... (i have access to a dust-free-room)

Your drive does not appear to have a board fault. The reason that the replacement PCB doesn't work is that each drive has unique calibration data that are stored in NVRAM. These data need to be transplanted from patient to donor.

I suggest you reinstall your original board and visit Seagate's forums for logical (ie software based) data recovery advice. There are plenty of free cloning and data recovery utilities.

@fzabkar: What do you mean? is there a tool for/from Seagate to fix a problem on the logic board? i suggest this is a software + hardware tool.
or does the SATA connector give access to firmware/software on the logic board?

i should search for Data-recovery-software? i found some software and i tried with that but because windows only recognizes the HDD in Device manager but doesnt show in "this computer" the tool doesn't see it either.

@Eric Lee: a local pro, as in Data recovery shop or just a decent computer store? when the computer was broke my collegue took it back to his computer-store and he said the drive crashed and could not be repaired.
because the drive is spinning i know the data is on there somewhere so...

Crashed is not a simple question, and I think it is not a PCB problem, find a data recovery if you still need the data.

I suggested visiting Seagate's forums in the event that your data can be retrieved using logical (ie software) recovery methods. This is possible if the drive spins up, is detected by BIOS with the correct capacity, doesn't make any horrible noises, and has a relatively small number of bad sectors.

The data recovery professionals use specialised hardware and software tools.

It would help if you were able to describe your problem more clearly. For example, "acting weird" doesn't mean much to anyone.
