Hi. My WD800 has a fried logic board. Tried a different logic board I had and it spun up but didn't work. So i think if I have the right match logic board it should work. Please let me know if you have one.

Model number is: WD800BB 00CAA0
Date: dec 2001
DSM: HSEHNV2AA

Thanks.

If you upload a detailed photo, one of us may be able to help you repair your board. Many times the problem is only a shorted diode, in which case it can simply be removed.

The reason that your replacement board didn't work is because it contains unique drive specific calibration data. These data need to be transferred from patient to donor. Sometimes this can be done by transplanting an 8-pin serial EEPROM chip.

Good luck.

Sorry, your motor control chip appears to have failed.

Try swabbing the surface with isopropyl alcohol (tape head cleaner). I may just be seeing particles of thermal foam, but I doubt it.

The board looks like it was manufactured in late 2001. The DR guys should be able to tell you whether a straight board swap should work.

If you have a multimeter, measure the resistances of the motor windings at the motor terminals. There will be 3 phases plus a common terminal. Confirm that none of the 3 phases are shorted or open circuit.

Motor control chip failing makes sense. The drive does not spin up with this board, but it did spin up with a different board. However, I'm hesitant to try just any other board in fear it might ruin the heads/plates.

The foam picture illustrates the motor chip burnt through the foam. I believe my house was hit by lightening. The electricity traveled through the modem cable and blew out my power supply, mother board, and hard drive.

The computer is old but I would like to recover the data. You are correct about late 2001. The hard drive has the date 14 Dec 2001.

Who are the DR guys? How do I get in touch with them?

Thanks.

The DR guys are always lurking in this forum.

Your EEPROM chip is actually the large parallel device at the bottom RH corner. I don't know whether it contains any adaptive data, as is the case with current drives.

My understanding is that you need to closely match several digits in the DCM number (Drive Configuration Matrix). ISTR that a WD expert in another Tech Support Forum explained the requirements for a swap.

Best of luck.

I see a logic board on ebay that appear to be the same model as mine. Can anyone (DR guys? other guys?) give any advice on whether if I bought it, it would work with my hard drive or would I need to calibrate unique drive specific data?

Replacement board that you have, what is a number of it?
Number is etched on a board and should say 2060-001092-xxx rev.x

If you have that board, I can help you resolder ROM chip with original microcode to a new board, so it would match your drive. I also have that board in stock, if you don't have a correct one.

Hi there,

The working board says 2061-001159-100EB
I am not very good with soldering.

If you don't mind, would be great if you could let me borrow your working board. I would be willing to pay for shipping.

Thanks.

That board is not compatible.

Unfortunately, We don't land PCB's.

Hi There,

Could anyone on this forum suggest someone in the NYC area who can help with soldering? I have no experience with soldering so wanted to seek out a professional.

Thanks.
