Please find below the compatibility rules to follow to replace a damaged board on a Maxtor drive with a board coming from another drive of the same series.

For the following Maxtor hard drive models: Fireball 3, DiamondMax 16, DiamondMax Plus 8, and DiamondMax Plus 9 there is also a GTLA Number on the model (next to barcode on the bottom of the drive). Format 1Y222J2223322. 1, 2 and 3 stand for numbers, Y and J for letters. The numbers 1 and 3 as well as the letter Y need to be identical to be able to replace the PCB on these drives.
To replace the circuit board on all other Maxtor drives the drives need to have the same PCBA uplevel number (which describes the revision of the circuit board) and need to be from the same drive family (e.g. Diamond Max 60 or D540X-4D). |

this is not right
it is much easer
there are onlye few board for eachmodel ( speaking with maxtors)
for qvantum it is even ease only as has 2 alll the others are the same

This is the answer given in written by Maxtor support (Ireland).
What I sent is just extracted from an email they sent me 3 weeks ago.
Now if you say that it's just bullshit, fine.
I am not a professional in hard disk, only an electronics engineer, but I really do not see why Maxtor would have sent this complicated email if there was nothing behind it. Do you have a better explanaiton ? |

i am an expert in that field, maxtors are mine favorites.
U can use F4FYa on all BWo models and D2 or D6 boards on Vwo.
End of story
and i am not expert for shit

The disk with dead board has Code YAR41VW0 and its board is marked D6FYP1.
The replacement board I tried comes from a disk with Code YAR41BW0 with board marked E4FYA, and it does not work.
I don't know what you mean by D2 or D6 board (I see nothing like that).

Thanks, I will give it a try...
I see in the ST documentation that this chip (marked 25P10V6) is 1MB serial flash, so of course it contains the firmware and probably other specific infos to the particular drive such as bad sectors.
It's a pity that there is no method published how to read and reflash it instead of dissolderig/resoldering which is always somewhat risky (reflashing also of course...). |

there si a whay to read it
changing is easy u just need some practice

I assume that there is a way to read it and reflash without removing the chip from the board, I asked Maxtor but they say they could not help...
