Hi there!
Drive is 1 year old, came in an external USB enclosure. Stopped showing up in Windows. Cracked it open and connected it directly with IDE to USB adapter. Does not show up in Windows or Linux (Slax).
Drive emits buzzing/humming sound. Sound is localized around the center of the platter. Platters do not spin.
Data on this drive is not ultra vital, it is mostly CD's i have ripped to MP3, but it represents several weeks of 'labor'. I'd like to get the data back, but I'm willing to try it myself and risk it.
I have access to the proper torx drivers to open this up, but no clean room.
My best guess is that the platter is knocked off center, or that the motor controller is toast. The drive was in a stable unmoved position when it went bad, so I don't know what caused the failure in the first place, but seeing so many posts mentioning the Barracuda, I can see I'm not alone.
Anybody have any suggestions? |

Well I opened it, and the platter won't spin. I put on some medical gloves, and went to work trying to get it to spin. I'm only touching the sides. It won't, it seems to be seized. Any help? |

This type of failure is a chalange for pros, but because you already opened a drive, it will cost much more to recover data from that drive.
You need special tools, equipment and extensive experience to handle this job.
Just leave it along and move on with your life if it's not that important. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |
