Hi

First of all, thanks for that great webpage, I watched all the videos and really learned a lot.
I have a problem, my Western Digital HDD makes the "click of death".
Now I am looking for a donor drive and to find a matching one I read the following informations from this webpage:

WESTERN DIGITAL DRIVES
DCM codes for the (5th??? And) 6th numbers must match.
No Western Digital drives with the letter R in the code. EB and BB models.
Western Digital Drives EB and BB have the head stack affixed from the lid.
Western Digital the sixth char in the model is the cache. U = 2meg V=8meg

My DCM is the following: HARCNV2AB
As you can see it has an R including.
The above descibtion only says something about EB and BB, but what is the problem if it has an R in the code? I mean is it useless to look for a donor or what?

R in the DCM people claim is "refurb"

but thats a lie. DCM actually doesnt mean very much at all.

also EB and BB are a lie almost all WD have heads affixed at the lid (except notebook drives)

this is cause by a failure with the headstack of the drive. The only way to repair this is by replacing it. For that you need an ISO 10 environment. This means that there is no more then 10 particles of dust the are smaller then .3 microns in the air space around the drive. This is acheived with a Laminar flow bench, these cost ~4000+ to buy, and about the same to construct. Furthermoore, you will need knowledge on how to replace a headstack properly without damaging it. Western digitals have the heads affixed at the lid, so when you remove the screw the alignment is lost. You must find the alignment.

This is only a small piece of the puzzle.
