I found a drive on ebay that was close to my damaged drive (motor whirs like it's trying to start, but then dies, then tries to spin again, etc).

I transplanted the PCB board and the motor was then able to spin. But the drive was not detected by the computer. Upon closer examination, I noticed one tiny component was different on the two PCB boards. This drive is an IBM 07N8450 (Oct 1, 02). The replacement was Oct. 12, 02.

The question is whether there's a motor-spinning part of the board circuitry and how to narrow down the search for the faulty component. (Apparently there is also a part of the board that governs data transfer.) Are there generic sections of the circuit board that a repair tech would know to zero in on, and 'most likely' components causing the problem like the one I've described?

When dealing with older hard drive models (40 gb) with lots of revisions, is there any way to procure an identical match PCB board?
