Well, my motherboard died... both 250GB HD's are identical (Samsung SP2504C); they were installed at the same time so I'd assume that the firmware is identical. One of them (with the operating system) was fine - I was able to get everything off of it. It works just fine. However, the other HD that I used for my applications and music has an issue... I tried to connect it through SATA/USB cable to my old PC and HD started getting smokey and smelly - the smoke appeared from the back when I powered on the HD... I unplugged it right away, so I am not sure if I will be able to save anything off of it. My friend told me that all the data is most likely OK and the something on the circuit board might have gone bad. Therefore, this HD seems to be the perfect candidate for the board swap...

There are no visible burn marks. Should I try the fridge trick first?

At this point, I have an issue finding the tool that I can use to open the HD's - I tried Home Depot and they had nothing. Please note that I live in Canada.

Try a brain trick first!

Do not open your drive under any surcumstances.
Do not freeze it.

If you wish to get your data take it to a pro or spend sometime learning info about drive repair.

Home Depot is Home repair shop, not a computer repair shop.

Calm down and use your resources.

I was finally able to get a hold of screwdriver; swapped the boards, and it worked! I was able to recover ALL the stuff from my HD!

I think the problem would have generated due to the differences in the power rating. Each motherboard may actually differ from one another with power ratings. So be careful what you wish for. Try to check these before doing anything.
