Thanks for the reply. I am continuing to research on this site and elsewhere to determine what my options may be. One post on this site indicates that since my drive is recognized incorrectly (as an 8GB HAWK) I may have issues with the SA / firmware that will not be remedied with a simple PCB swap or other swapouts.
Can anyone confirm this conclusion?
Thanks! |

Provide details of the steps you already have taken, so I can advice a solution.
Did you try replacing a board? _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

Thanks for the reply. The only steps I have taken so far are to
1. install the HD in a running PC and get the HAWK identification in BIOS
2. try the diagnostic software from WD without success
3. Identify the hard drive components listed above
4. Get a "head crash" diagnosis from a local data recovery firm.
Thanks again |

I assume they had the drive in order to diagnose it...? _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, they had the hard drive and no seals were broken on it.
Thanks |

It is most likely that one of the heads failed....
I was looking for details of original behaivuor of the drive. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

We had a power failure at the house. The drive has not operated since then.
I did not observe any unusual behavior in the drive prior to the power failure.
Once the failure occurred, the drive would spin up, I would hear about 3 to 4 clicks, and then that would be it. I have attached the drive to a different PC to make sure it was not the PC's power supply.
Please let me know if you need any additional information.
I am willing to attempt surgery on the drive if necessary, because the quotes I have seen flying around are far from the amount I am willing to spend right now.
Thanks again. |
