is swapping circuit boards on identical drives fairly simple?
i think spinrite whacked my drive bios or something..it was functioning well now it just goes BEEP...(KLANK)..BEEP...(KLANK)..BEEP...(KLANK)"
i was simply trying to get a disk surface util to mark the bad spot bad..
"Maxtor 6Y160P0"
"Maxtor CALYPS0"
why does the Highoint controller bios now announce the drive as "Maxtor CALYPS0" it has always announced "Maxtor 6Y160P0"
found these
http://www.newsbackup.com/about689436.html
apparently Spinrite corrupted my drive's firmware.

Then, where did you get the good board? Try switch the logic board of your dead drive to the drive where you get your good board and see what's happening. Maybe it will tell you whether it is the problem of the board or something else.
You results deterred me. Looks that my 6Y200P0 has exact problem as your 6Y160P0. If your doesn't work, I don't need to try mine. |

I had a somewhat different problem but did a board swap with a Maxtor, got the drive functional and recognized by bios but no files would show up.
I tried using Spinrite, and after taking nearly forever doing nothing, or maybe worse than nothing I tossed it and got a refund. I don't think its useful as a data recovery tool, and its mainly meant for revitallizing working drives. I don't know, but in my book its a POS.
Anyhow, I suggest trying the free trial version of GetDataBack at getdataback.com. Make sure you install it without the errant drive connected. I think there is a fair chance it will find your files and that any corruption wrought by Spinrite will not prevent it from doing so. If it does find your files, it will set you back $80 to be able to recover them, but for me that was a small price to pay. |
