Let me first start my first post by saying wow, this site is amazing.

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320Gig Harddrive that is not working. I think the board is at fault. It might be a faulty Capacitor (ST Micorelectronics BUX C641), but I cannot find any information or a replacement on the net. I was wondering if any of you guys might have a board I can use.

The specs are

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB
ST3320620A
Fimware:3.AAE
Site code: WU

I just did a straight swap of ST3320620A, Firmware: 3.AAE, S/N 9QF4, Site Code: TK, P/N 9BJ04G for ST303204N1A1A-RK , Firmware: 3.AAE, S/N 9QF6DD5K, Site Code: TK, P/N 9BJ0A4 (note the multiple differences) and it worked flawlessly. No ROM chip exchange needed.

Hello folks,

I have a problem with my ST3320620A and after reading this great board I want to give the PCB swap a try.
So is this PCB for ST3320620A FW:3.AAE SC: TK still available? I am willing to buy it and if necessary resell it afterwards.
I am also in the Netherlands but shipping to Germany is not a big problem.

Oh, my problem: I placed this Seagate in an IcyBox and now it starts to click when trying to access it, blocking the IDE bus. Motor spins up.
Starting without IDE connected works fine, motor spins up.
I had the same prob with another Seagate in that IcyBox.
An IcyBox is an external USB/FireWire housing.

Have you had any luck finding one? In front of me I have the following which I can offer:

I have just used this myself for a PCB swap to get a similar drive working.
Contact me asap as this drive is meant ot be picked up by a customer of mine on Thursday/Friday, but I can always go and get them a new disk.

The chipset on my burnt PCB says Agere. I posted a new thread for the 300Gb PCB and then saw that the numbers are almost the same.

Furogato - The chances of my board getting your drive working are absolutely zero. The part number is still very important and in this case will cause a conflict, primarily because my drive is a PATA connection and yours is a SATA.

Also to 'Elchmaen' the clicking noise you can hear is not going to be fixed by a PCB exchange. If it is a repetitive clicking sound and your HDD does not detect in the BIOS the likely causes are head crash, faulty firmware (v. frequent in Western Digital Drives) or pre-amplifier fault. None of which can be fixed by a straight PCB swap.

Faulty or corrupt firmware must be manipulated by a machine like the PC-3000.

Hi John,

how much would a diagnosis and a possible firmware reflash cost? I assume you read my other post. If not, the clicking noise appeared right after installing it into an IcyBox. It happened also to a ST3500630A.

But a ST3250620A works fine in that IcyBox. And other drives, too.

BTW, if the PCB swap does not help there is no sense in buying your drive, is there?

Yes that's right buying the PCB from me is unlikely to solve your problem. Although I have my own data recovery company I'm not here to profiteer as I myself find these forums a useful place to share knowledge (and parts).

With regard to what you sent me in a private message (I hope you don't mind me posting it):

"Yes, drive spins up. As long as there is no access attempt via the IDE interface or no IDE cable attached it just spins and remains silent.

Sometimes it is detected by the BIOS, sometimes not.
A USB-to-IDE adapter also causes the drive to click the moment the OS (W2K) tries to identify/access the drive and tries to mount it. "Identification" works, ie. in the removable drives window there is a USB drive which is labelled as ST3320630A. This is where the procedure stops. The drive blocks the IDE interface (or here USB) and clicks and after some time spins down."

Some help and advice.
1) First off forget about trying to connect it through a usb interface. You add a whole layer of software & interfacing devices by trying to access your HDD as a mass storage device in windows. It will just make life more difficult.

2) I've had a few disks in that sometimes detect in the bios and sometimes don't. Usually this is typical of a drives read/write capabilities starting to fail. This can be caused by a number of faults including heads that are becoming worn or misaligned.

3) About the clicking noise you get when it DOES detect in the bios. I have a feeling this is due to bad sectors at the start of the drive.

It's quite hard to say what is exactly wrong with the drive without viewing the drive in person. However, I suggest that you try your luck at getting it to detect in the bios and have another empty HDD plugged in andthen boot to some suitable cloning software which operates in DOS (do not attempt to try & boot to windows!). Perform a reverse clone, with a sector skip for unreadable areas, to get as much of your data as possible.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe one point was not clear enough:
Although the drive is detected by the BIOS there is no way for me accessing it because it starts to click and then the IDE-Bus is blocked.

Is there may be a linux tool (preferably Freeware) that can reset the IDE-Bus so that I can access the drive?
