My WD 120 HD died yesterday. Wouldnt spin up. Not even a year old. Lots of personal data, music, photos, videos and back upsOrdered new drive hoping at worst case senario I will attempt to change the platter from deffective to new one. I noticed today my logic board was fried. 2 chips toasted. I was searching for replacement logic boards when I came across your site. Excellent idea! I am hoping new one uses same firmware. I will post back to let all know of the out come. Thank you for your idea. |

If I read your post right, you say you will try to swap platters in a worst case scenario. I strongly recommend you don't try this. You need to be in a 100% clean room first of all. Slightest bit of dirt can ruin the drive. The heads of the drive have an extremely tight clearance and even a speck of dust can cause damage. Secondly, I have tried (and gave up) doing this, and it is next to impossible. The heads don't move completely out of the way of the platters so you end up scratching the heads on the platter on removal. Now comes the fun part, reinstallation! Good luck keeping the many heads (2 per platter) apart so you can get the platter back in place. Then, you end up bending and scratching the heads on the platters on reinstallation. I found it way too frustrating to even finish. If you have a better idea on how to do this then have at it and let us know how it went.
