Hi Overkil269:

Did you ever find the ST3400620A Hard Drive?

By Coincidence I have one that failed, and need a replacement so I can attempt to recover my data.

My failed HD has the same specs on your post, and the PCB has an Agere Chip.

I did buy a same model new Hard Drive in the hope it would be an exact match. However, the new HD has an ST Chip on the Logic Board, and cannot run my bad HD.

I will appreciate any help out there.

Johan

jfploeg,
I was able to find a matching HDD, however, it only worked intermittently. I was able to recover all of the data by purchasing an external HDD enclosure from NewEgg.com. I read somewhere that the drive controller is constantly queried when used as an external drive, however when attaching the drive directly to the motherboard, it is only queried once, or something like that and it times out. My drive would work four about 20 min then get hot and the heads would slam against the side, then the drive wouldn't work for about 3 days. Using the external enclosure, I was able to turn the drive off, then back on and it would work again.

I purchased my identical drive from;

Misty was very helpful and sent me a drive very fast. If you want to try and replace the PCB, she'd be a good person to contact.
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric:

Thank you for the fast response.

I did call Ms. Harris at Drive Solutions, Inc. Unfortunately she could not find a match in their stock. However, she was very courteous and provided three other possible sources. None of them could help.

I will attempt your other solution, and I will post any outcome for the benefit of the Forum.

Again, thanks for the help.

Johan
