| Client with post hurricane Sandy/power failure. firmware CC35 date mfg 09446. PCB is 100536501 REV A. This units PCB had a shorted 12V TVS diode and two zero Ohm resistors from the molex to the TVS. I removed the TVS and replaced the 0 Ohm resistors. The drive powers up and clicks like 6 times and then stops. The drive motor continues to spin. If I HOT plug the drive it is recognized by WinXP (or Win7) but if I boot with attached the BIOS does not post. Looking for some ideas or feedback as to wether this sounds like HDA failure or PCB failure. Would the 12V overload have fried the HDA PCB? Or generally only the main board ? |

| Sooo. Is this what a preamp failure sounds like? The linked sound file is an MP3 and has 10 clicks then stops but the drive continues to SPIN. If I unplug/replug it does aga for 10 and stop, etc... |

Preamp failure sounds like a typical clicking. Microchip (Preamp) can not transfer any data, so read/write heads just click.

Hey I am not trying to make fun of your efforts but I think it would be better if you have any sort of guidelines just in case we do something and it would mess things up more than ever too. Make sure you have a backup plan.

Seagate made its name in hard drives but has also taken a lead in SSDs. Last year, it showed a 60TB SSD that could ship this year.

Yeah, the problem is now they've ruined their reputation with all the failed Grenada's they sold. I know very few of my customers will every buy a Seagate branded product again.
