Hi all, In trying to find some solutions i stumbled on this forum and have found some very helpful information.

I made the schoolboy error of connecting my hard drives to the PCI power line on my new psu and when i went to turn it on, that lovely burning smell and many many problems.

I managed to burn:

Maxtor DiamondMax 20 80GB (backup OS)
Samsung HD103UJ 2008.03 (4x 250Gb storage partitions)
Crucial CT64M255 64Gb SSD (main OS)

Reading through various threads I jumped at my soldering iron and long nose pliers and launched myself at the TVS diodes.

To my amazement, my lil 80Gb backup drive booted first time, and i hurriedly transferred all data onto my one remaining 250Gb HDD.

Sadly however, the HD103UJ was not so simple. The drive has had its TVS chips removed and still fails to spin up or show on the BIOS. Are there any other power controlling diodes that can still be removed? Or anything else i can try. I've read that these 1gb F1 spinpoint drives canbe a nightmare and not many people have the knowledge to access a fried drive. Now.. my poor little SSD. Rather than mess with this, crucial offered a 3yr warranty (although a little known UK law means that all electrical equipment is covered by the retailer (not the manufacturer) for 6 years!) and said that they would run a free data recovery program to put the data on my new one.. some good new at least.

Please if anyone can give any information on the 1Tb F1, I would be most grateful.

Warranty usually covers equipment malfunctions, but not user errors, so you might have a problem there.

By removing TVS chips you removing protection from any other possible power surges that could kill other main chips on a drive, such as preamp chip.

As for the SSD and its warranty, I shall just have to see how that goes.

Thank you for your concerns about the TVS removal and lack of power protection, I only need the drive alive long enough to transfer the information from it.

I was just wondering if there was anything else that would be worth trying before conceding and sending the drive to a specialist.

hi sunny, i really hope you can...

Well after the initial problem, the BIOS would not detect the F1, nor would it spin up at all. I removed the two diodes near the power connector and still it would not spin up. Yesterday a friend who recovered a similar problem told me there was a third diode on the PCB that could be damaged and we removed that. Still absolutely no signs of life from the drive.

This is a picture of the same PCB (not my own) the diodes removed are the two in the top left, and one that is bottom centre. Although I am suspicious about this third one as have not found anyone else comment on it.

The drive itself is a HD103UJ 2008.03 - I have not updated the firmware on it. If you need part numbers or codes off the pcb please let me know.

I see that none of the data recovery experts mentioned the fuse in series with the 5V TVS diode on the Samsung drive. Hmm ...

The third diode may be part of a DC-DC converter. Not a good idea to remove it. In fact, the chopper transistor could be damaged as a consequence.

I don’t think you have to worry about the warranty. They might read as if it does not give anything for user errors. But they are usually generous enough to replace it with a new one. But the data lost is not gonna come back.
