Hello all,
So recently my brother's computer died, I wasn't home at the time but apparently he tried to turn it on and there was some smoke etc, from what I could tell there was a power surge as there was so many things plugged in it was bound to happen. For a while before I noticed his computer used to make whiny noises and weird noises upon startup as well.
Anyway the hard drive doesn't spin up and I noticed the burn marks in the following pictures. From my limited knowledge on this, I'm guessing I need to replace the PCB? He has a lot of data on there related to his work which he hasn't backed up for some time but I don't think data recovery is a viable option at all.

As for firmware etc I think the second picture has all that information, so is a replacement PCB the way to go?
Thanks for your help! |

When looking for a match of the Diamond Plus 9 does the LBA have to match exactly? this is a 6Y120P0 unit... |

I am attempting a PCB swap but the K4FYA board when swapped with a L6FYA did not work (they look identical and all chips match). So based on other information I found it seems that the 6Y120P0 032251 number must match. Many of the drive I see are LBA: 240121728 the client drive is LBA: 234375000 - this drive does not seem to have an 8pin chip for calibration data. This is why I ask about the LBA. Since they are all 120GB drives I want to figure out why the LBA values differ? More of a curiosity at this point. The client does not want to shell out for a full recovery (off site) but is willing to attempt a low cost option. Thanks if you can elaborate on this. |

"LBA: 234375000"
This is a refurbished drive and logical size is reduced. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |

I have a failing Maxtor DiamondMax9 (160 GB) hard drive that I need to replace and want to know what is the BEST quality hard drive out there?
I'm looking for a SATA drive that is at least 250 GB. I have a slim computer case so cool operating temperature (low power consumption) and reliability are more important than absolute performance. _________________ hedging plants |
