I have a Hitachi Travelstar 2.5" drive,
http://ldf4n6.serveftp.net/images/IMG_1487.JPG
Model: HTS725025A9A361
Made In: Thailand
P/N: 0A73352
MLC: DA3247
The top 2 lines of the PCB are:

I ran diagnostics on the drive using an Atola. I need a donar PCB and
maybe a head stack replacement as well. After some research it
appears that many of the new Hitachi drives store adaptives and other
information in the NVRAM stored on the PCB which will need to be moved
from the original PCB to the donar.
I'm not sure how to identify the NVRAM chip. Research I've come
across says the NVRAM chip is an 8-post chip and may be the U3 or U6
chip. Other information says its the U5. Can someone identify and tell me how they identified the NVRAM Chip on my PCB?

Also, I'm looking for a donar drive if anyone has one for sale. |

See my HDD chip database:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/HDD_ICs.txt
The term, NVRAM, is a misnomer. Both chips are nonvolatile, and neither is a RAM. Nevertheless, for whatever reason, U6 is referred to as the "NVRAM". Its part number is actually 93C76 or S-93C76.

http://www.datasheetarchive.com/pdf-datasheets/Datasheets-3/DSA-41509.pdf
U3 (LE25FU106B) is a serial flash memory.
LE25FU106B, Sanyo, 1Mbit, 128Kx8, serial flash memory:

BTW, for the information of others that may encounter this thread, there is 2A fuse, F1, marking code "N", near the SATA power connector:
Littelfuse Surface Mount Fuses, N = 2A, S = 4A:
http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/48294.pdf
Diodes D1 and D2 are also a common failure. I suspect that one would be a 5V TVS diode, the other a Schottky rectifier. |

Any update on swapping these two chips? I have a similar problem with a Hitachi 7k500 2.5" drive as well. |

I swapped both chips to the donor PCB but still could not pass the PCB diags on the Atola. I tried several other things but in the end, it was not a successful recovery. |

when you moved chips did drive spin up? Could you tell what you did do with drive and what you saw? |

Yes, the drive did spin up. The Atola diags did not pas the PCB test and suggested a problem with the PCB or the head stack. Assuming I now had a good PCB, I swapped the head stack. At this point I still could not pass the Atola diags. Same error messages. I removed the top of the drive case to watch the arm movement. To me it looked like it was searching for SA but could not find it.
Any thoughts on what I could have done differently or additional things that I could have done? |

Atola is not perfect to work with system area. May be drive can't read some system moduls and can not initialize. You need check system area for reading errors. |

I think I can help you with this problem, if I an get the damaged parts. I might be able to run some tests and maybe I can diagnose and repair the whole thing for you. All I need is a small fee, which you can decide.
