I would like to apologize in advance for my awesome lack of tech savvy.
I might be using some incredibly wrong terminology here, but I hope this is understandable for someone who can maybe help me out.

I have a 500GB WB MyBook and I store all of my .mp4s and .mp3s for my ipod on there. It's been full for a while and has always worked nicely for me.

So..5 or 6 months ago, I got up from the computer too quickly and as I stood up, I accidentally yanked the USB cord outta the hard drive. Hard. It didn't quite fit back into its slot anymore, so I had a local mom and pop store here fix that for me. Worked fine when I got it back. Everything was jim dandy.

Cut to this morning. My iPod was acting funny, so I restored it to default settings and went into my MyBook to retrieve all of its backup. Well, lo and behold, things are really crazy in there now.

Some of my tv show folders are still full and working perfectly, but some have weird, nonsensical random characters everywhere. My music folder is completely empty. All 12000 songs.

I want to cry...more than I already have.

So, my question is this...Is this HD corrupted? Is there anything I can do to try to fix this kind of problem? Am I screwed?

I really appreciate any time and help anyone can give me. Thanks very much for bearing with me.

It's look like file system problems. In this case you need make copy of your drive by special ptogram which can copy disk sector by sector. You can use R-studio, winhex, GetDataBack. All those program has that option. After making copy you need use program like R-studio or GetDataBack to check copy of your drive for your files. It is good and safety way to get your data back. And don't try to check original drive for your files by those program, because if drive has real problem, you can lose your data without any chance to recovery.

never use any recovery program with your original drive, except for making copy of your drive.

Try a different cable on your drive and try to unplug it to see if it will fix your problem. Might have to do this couple of times.
If it won't work, look for an experienced data recovery person. At this moment it could be very cheap recovery.

Obviously hers is a file system corruption issue. What good will fiddling with cables do in her case?
