A common problem with your board is a shorted TVS diode and an open fuse.

See diodes D3 and D4, and zero ohm resistors R67 and R64, near the SATA power connector.

To repair your board, you only need to remove the shorted diode and replace the resistor with a piece of wire, or a 2A picofuse. Just be sure your PSU is OK, as you will no longer have any overvoltage protection.

You can obtain replacement diodes from Farnell. Use an SMBJ12A for the 12V diode, and an SMAJ5.0A for the 5V diode.

If you need more advice, one of us will be happy to help you.

Good luck.
I have already did it,but it seems its never work for an Hour.
I think there is another problem that my unit are encountering for.
Unfortunately the TVS diodes aren't always able to limit the damage. :-(

Your most expedient solution may be to replace the board, in which case you would need to transfer the ROM contents from patient to donor. If your PCB's EEPROM data are intact, then it shouldn't cost you more than $20 for the ROM transfer. Your PCB supplier should be able to do this for you.

Hi,
I'm Italian so please forgive me if i make any error.
I've a problem with the same hd shown in the first post wd10eads and (unfortunately) with another one: wd15eads.
Almost surely my problems are caused by shorted tvs diodes and 0 resistors.
Anyway before i try to search working PCBs or try to fix them i need an help (maybe not the only one):
How can i recognize the firmware? Is there on the label something concerning this?
Or what....?
.
Thanks!

Yes.

However, the MCU contains "adaptive" data that need to be transferred to the donor PCB.

The following vendor can transfer the firmware for various models for US$20:
http://www.hdd-parts.com/firmware-transfer.html

This vendor can do the same transfers for Seagate/Maxtor boards for US$10:

This PCB's BIOS is intergrated on the Main Controller IC. You should exchange the Main Controller IC to let the HDD be recognized.

Hi all, I know this is an old post but I have the same problem.

I got my new PCB and I placed it on the dead drive. I only plugged the power into it and it spins up, clicks a couple times and sounds fine. I didn't plug the SATA cable up yet for fear of it messing something up.

(I have not exchanged the Main Controller IC yet because nobody in town can do it)

My question is, what will happen if I plug my SATA cable in? Will it do nothing? Further damage? Maybe recognize the drive and be ok? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can plug your cable in and it won't damage anything.
Your drive will be clicking, because, at least, new PCB does not have unique microcode which is stored on original PCB or there could be some other problem.

Thank you for the info. All I did was plug the power into it. What should my next step be if the drive is not recognized? I still have the old PCB. Thanks.

You have to move ROM info to that new PCB.
