Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
S/N: 9QM1TKYK
Model: ST3500320AS
P/N: 9BX154-303
Firmware: SD15
Date Code: 08371
Site Code: KRATSG
WWN: 500C5000B8180DA

Controller Board:

PCB: 100466725
REV A
DLAJ-4

I believe the ROM chip is the SO8 which is closer to the SATA interface then the other SO8. It appears to be a STMicroelectronics M25P40, is this correct?

If you need to purchase a PCB, try the following vendor:
http://www.onepcbsolution.com/

His price is US$40, plus $10 for a ROM transfer, if required.

Otherwise, upload a detailed photo of your PCB and one of us will help you with a DIY repair, if feasible.

BTW, I am not associated with any supplier.

Thanks for the info, I'll likely buy it from Eric though, as I've already been in contact with him. I uploaded photos, do you not see them? I did SHIFT + Reload to make sure they were still there, and not just in my cache. Do you think the ROM is the chip I mentioned? The SO8, 8 pin chip furthest to the bottom?

Thanks for your help.

Edit: The chip is furthest to the bottom, not furthest to the right.

I can't see the part number, but M25P40 is an EEPROM.

My notes should help you identify the parts:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/HDD_ICs.txt
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/TVS_diodes.txt

BTW, if your drive spins up but is not detected, or is detected with a capacity of 0 LBAs, then it is not a PCB issue. Instead it is probably symptomamtic of the BSY bug that affects SD15 firmware. If so, then there is an easy DIY fix. Alternatively, Seagate offers free data recovery services, but no doubt Eric would have told you that.

See this thread:

You should have mentioned it in your first response, but instead you refer him to someone that you are "not associated with" and never used their services.

Yes, that was an unfortunate omission, but I didn't do it deliberately. As you know, I will always endeavour to help the user with a no-cost DIY solution, even when the "gurus" say it isn't possible.

As for onepcbsolution.com, I mentioned that vendor because the "gurus" at HDD Guru have themselves expressed surprise at his inexpensive service, and because there has been very positive feedback for this supplier in several forums.

Thanks for all that useful info fzabkar. I didn't know you could get a serial terminal from a hard drive, especially with a simple TTL -> 5v converter, I might try that just for fun on some other drives.

Does the BSY issue only happen after a firmware update, or could this be something that would just happen over time?

It came with SD15 and I never updated it, this happened about a year after it was bought. The drive is not mine, but I think he was low on space if that might have been a trigger for that firmware bug.

According to Seagate, the BSY bug is resolved by the firmware update.

Unfortunately you cannot apply Seagate's update to a dead drive.

BTW, here is another link to Seagate's technical bulletin:
