Probably overheated the drive and it made the sound as it seized up. Seeing as you didn't use it for a while, it was cooled enough for it to go again. It may do that again eventually.

For a server, I would go with U320 SCSI drives from Seagate. The U160's are pretty solid in my experience.

Not sure but maybe the external enclosure took the hit and not the drive?
Do other drives work in the enclosure still?
